Philippa Threlfall: Murals, Lost and Saved
Philippa is well known to many u3a members and a very well known and respected Wells resident artist and potter.
Philippa's Introduction
Because I work in a permanent medium - ceramic, is as we know much present in excavations of the past. My work mostly lasts and hopefully some will still be evident in years to come. However, time and changing attitudes mean that a good deal of work has been taken from the wall. And either destroyed, or 'put in store' (probably the same thing) or moved to a new and sometimes better site. On the latest count I think there are 34 murals extant and probably about 8 or 9 gone for ever. Some are just lost.
I will talk about how the murals were inspired, made and erected. A little about the techniques and clients (mostly corporate). It has been an interesting exercise to follow the fates of these murals over the many years that they have been in existence.
